This was flying back from Steward Island on Sunday night since the
ferry we took over was canceled going back due to the weather. By far
the smallest plane I've ever flown in - 10 people including the pilot.
Jojo is sitting next to the pilot and, believe it or not, struck up a
conversation with him. It was the pilot's sixth trip of the day, and he
wasn't bothered in the least by the pouring rain and high winds!

It was a little windy! Jojo and I were on the Southernmost Point of New
Zealand's South Island, though not as far south as Stewart Island where
we were coming back from. Good times, though, good times. We had
spent the night in a farmer's field, sleeping in our sleepings bags in
the back of the truck with Dodgeball playing on Jojo's laptop (we had
already seen Anchorman, Van Wilder, and Blazing Saddles). I took a
really cool time lapse picture over about 30 minutes which I'll post
soon, but just after it got dark, around midnight, a buzz of brightly
colored lights slid out on the ocean around a point and came towards
us. We both shot up in our sleeping bags and quickly realized a cruise
ship was passing by! A wee bit cold and windy for that, eh mate?

Video clip is pretty self-explanatory. I should note that it is the steepest, inhabited
road in the world, at least that has claimed the title and accompanying
tourist traffic.  That was the last stop in Dunedin - we had
visited New Zealand's only castle and their albatross colony, along
with the Cadbury Factory and the Speights Brewery the day before!

  • Arrrgghh maties! No USB ports on this computer, but it is the fastest connection I've found in New Zealand! Sad, sad news today, folks! I'm leaving New Zealand in a couple of hours! You can't have too many exclamation marks! The good news is there's a girl picking me up in Oregon to go skiing with me this weekend!

Oh, and I leave tonight from here at 11p on Wednesday, January 18th. I arrive before that. And fly to Phoenix. And to Portland. All before 11p on January 18th. Gotta love the International Date Line. Someone please figure that out and get back to me on how it all works. Kidding kidding kidding....well, if it means you'll comment, fine, make a dissertation in that case!

*gasp* Still can't get over the fact that I have so much video and pictures to post and not a port to plug into. Haha, someone just said "lorry" walking by. Yes, Sarah, I know what that means! I can't be bothered! As soon as I can, though, I'll get these videos up and start uploading the 4000 pictures I took here. Plus Lehnert's 3,000 and Jojo's 600 pictures. We've got hours of video, too....but that will take longer. Should I: a) buy a Mac b) buy a fast PC c) wait for the new ATI technology to come out to buy a PC? Your vote will be taken into serious consideration.

Okay, I do have a question for all y'all. Walking around here, if I hear someone say they reorganized their boot, what do they mean?

I will also accept suggestions for a prize for the best answer, accurate or not.

Yeah, still in the airport. There's a sparrow flying around next to me in the terminal! Speaking of which, I saw the tail end of that movie and was confused....I hope that doesn't happen to me. I need to go through customs now, so I'm gonna wash the dirt off my hiking boots so I don't have any trouble getting into The States (as they say here) because I'm carrying dirt-borne organisms or something. Did you know that there were no mammals besides bats in New Zealand before Europeans brought them over? Okay, okay, I'm leaving! God Bless New Zealand! Next time you think of a destination, don't think Cancun or Aca-can't-spell-pulco, go south! Watch for web specials like I did, and have a blast!! Thank you Lord for this wonderful opportunity!

PS: I have a sunburn. It stays light out until 11p. Boy will I miss this. I'll miss you, too, Jojo.

Headed off on the smallest plane I've ever been on to get back on Invercargill since our ferry for tonight was canceled due to the weather. Unusually bad weather for them, but what can you do. We miss you Lehnert!! It was a crazy windy night last night with amazingly strong winds, but we've survived and stayed dry, even with a pile of hail outside our tent. =)

So this is the furthest south I've ever been, in the Subantartic. Yet I've never been to the Deep South of the US, except to get to Florida as a kid. What's the furthest south you've ever been?

Yes, gale force winds predicted for tonight! Yay for tents. Here are a couple pictures from today - at Bluff, New Zealand and in the hostel here on Stewart Island.

PS: E-mail me your addresses! I have tons of postcards!

    Bonus Footage

Lance was great - he offered a lot of insights as a New Zealand-born, Washington state-raised, New Zealand-employed tour guide who appeared in the Lord of the Rings movies and has a lot of local knowledge. Really great, yes, tons of pictures. I filled up my 512mb card and started on the 1gb card, still only one battery charge required. =)

The other video captured our other highlight today in a slightly discombobulated format since the employees were yelling at me during the taping. I can't stress this enough, just wait until we get all the video together from our three cameras and my cell phone, it'll glorious.

Today we bid farewell to Lehnert who is flying from here in Queenstown to Christchurch to Aukland to Hawaii to Los Angeles to Atlanta to Milwaukee. Please pray for his safety! And my sanity as I lose him... *tear* but Jojo and I are looking forward to the space in the vehicle so we can cozy up together and sleep there on rainy nights. But today is beautiful! In the 80s and absolutely sunny!

One last tidbit, I am going to Portland via Phoenix next week on Wednesday, so I'm looking forward to seeing Esther. If you're in the Phoenix airport that night, I'd say hi, but I think I'll just inhale some hot desert air and head up north. Good times, good times... not looking forward to the end, but I know the adventures never stop. Today I overheard a conversation at a fish and chips shop. The girl was telling her co-worker that she dreams of Prince Charming coming and the two of them traveling the world together. A little different than the dream I always hear of buying a huge house and so on. Traveling is awesome, and I wouldn't want it to be my whole life, but I wouldn't want parking myself to be my whole life either. I really don't have control, so it makes no sense for me to say this but anyways....no worries, mates!

  • Totally the tourist scene there, but it's one of the must-do things for Queenstown. Tomorrow morning? Lord of the Rings tour in a 4x4 vehicle! But tonight we wish Senor Lehnert adieu because his flight is tomorrow night.

We've met a lot of people here! And we keep running into them from city to city, so it makes things cozy and fun. In fact, the hostel (where we stay most nights) atmosphere is the exactly the atmosphere my dorm room was never able to achieve. Gorgeous human beings, primarily female, flowing in and out, sparking up conversations with you about their Chilean, German, British, you-name-it backgrounds. I know it's a different country, even continent, but I love you Esther. =) I'll let ya know how the evening goes, folks!

  • If you do nothing else, watch this video of our adventures so far. It has never-before-seen video clips and images! The file size is under 4 megs, so just wait a bit, and you'll be treated! I'm so excited about this video, I hope you all get to see it and let me know how you like it. Unlike a lot of these videos posted here, you see quite a bit more of me, for better or for worse!

Quick commentary: Subway is one of the largest and fastest growing chains in New Zealand. For whatever reason, it really clicks with Kiwis and actually employs a number of Americans. Lehnert and I aren't allergic to fish, so we bought shark burgers and filets across the street and joined Jojo here. The colors are skewed, but the audio worked, so I wasn't going to redo it!

It was sooooo windy, and my pants were soaked through and falling off. Eventually I gave up and just took my pants off. Lots of fun conversations on board. Now we're in Queenstown in the middle of the South Island and enjoying the atmosphere here, catching up on showers and laundry and generally warming up and drying off.

Good book, by the way. It was $79.99 in Kiwi dollars (subtract about 30% for US dollars) so I would be happy to share it with people when I get back. Sorry, I'm way behind on subscriptions, but I'll try to catch up! Don't hold it against me! Not much time left on this trip, I can't believe it!

  • Today

Quite a full day today! My first time ever being on a glaysher (as we say it - here they say it glaseer), and it was a lot of fun! A rare thing, it's actually growing at a crazy-fast rate of 70 centimeters per day! We did the day trip that was probably the best deal we've had yet. Most things seem to cost about $150 - skydiving, caving, and this trip, and this time we were out for the whole day from 8a-5p for the money. Oh yeah, my budget of $40-50/day is being exceeded by a factor of three pretty much every day. We're hungry boys who drive a lot of miles!

I'm really thankful for this opportunity to be here! It's wonderful and relaxing and strenuous and educational all at the same time. It's a daily concious effort to not take the scenery for granted, and it does remind me so much of the Lord of the Rings. The popularity of American music is always amusing, and my collection of MP3s on my phone keeps amusing people, largely because while New Zealand may be 16 hours ahead of the US, it's years behind in technology, so it costs 50 cents a minute to talk on your cell phone (most people text message instead) and the dinosaur phones we have are what's mainstream here. It's kind of part of the Kiwi lifestyle to be laid back and less cutting-edge, part of the appeal of the islands as a whole.

It's a cool part of the world to be when you can be on a glacier one day and the beach the day before. Here are some pics from my camera phone, everything else will be on the DVD and on the facebook later. Um, at least a lot of them, I'm burning through about 500MB of pictures and video a day. Just coming up with witty captions for 400 pictures of a glacier will be a challenge!  Cheers!

A reallly long day! So much of this trip is just riding and driving from one place to the next! The whole country is about the size of California, but the roads are so backwards and difficult. If this were a more densely populated country like, say, Japan, they would have the largest and most beautiful bridges in the world, but instead, they have winding roads that switchback all the way up and down mountainsides instead of a quick jog from peak to peak! It makes for quite an experience and a constant battle with motion sickness!

My oh my, I had a lot of fun tonight talking to people from all over like I mention in the video. Just now, the Finnish girl, Siru got back with the Melbourne guy she hit it off with tonight, and I'm folding laundry and uploading video, having read as much as my eyes can handle of John Perkins's book. Fascinating stuff! I am wondering if my family is trying to text message me, Esther the only one who has actually gotten anything through, and even so, my friends are answering them these days too. =) I've got less than 60 seconds of internet time with this dial-up, so I'm out for the evening, at least for a couple hours, because in about 4 hours we're starting up a glacier!

  • Yesterday

    Today

Just saying hi from an Internet cafe in McDonalds! Arggh! This place and a Caltrex (gas station...errr petrol) are the only places open on a Sunday morning. Lemme say I did not travel to the other side of the Earth to go to a McDonalds or any other Corporate America place for that matter. I'd check out a house church, but we've got a blackwater rafting trip scheduled in 4 minutes. Maybe tonight, I'll check it out.

Last night I was driving for 3 hours on the wrong side of the road - it was fun! My skin's a little pink from the UV rays, and I had a great mountain climbing experience yesterday that I'll post the video for soon. Adios!

Here are the pics from today!
