I need a new header.
Talking to some of my friends, I can't even picture working for 25 hours a week or even less. I put in 43 hours on Friday and Saturday, but that's more than normal, even for me. Still, I have bills. I check my measly account balance every day hoping there's a bank error in my favor like a Monopoly Chance card. Plus, working is something that I enjoy - and the people that I'm talking about are working in their career fields too - nursing or flying airplanes, pretty sweet jobs if you ask me.
Then there's our mechanic. He's making almost $30/hour with us, and he works a couple hours a week. If I made that, I'd be going for overtime every other week and flying somewhere for my time off. It's a no-brainer! Any insights? Why do people pass up on hours at great wages at jobs in their fields? Why are most of these examples women? What doesn't appeal about working hard for a while so that you can doing something really enjoyable the rest of the time?

What is even harder to understand are guys with families and no jobs who turn down paid work hours. My husband has had 2 guys turn him down recently when he offered them work...one because he had to go pick up some random friend from the airport and another for some other nonsense reason. You would think if you had a family to support and no active income you would be jumping at the chance to work, but I guess not. Very strange.
My husband is more like you. He just finished a whole day at one job and just now headed off to work for probably six more hours at another job. Fortunately for me, he doesn't do this all the time, but when he needs to he does.
My problem is my jobs won't pay me enough.
Some folks are okay with just getting by though.
it's tough. i guess for the mechanic and the women who have great pay and few hours...it's about lifestyle choices. it works for them. they'd rather work X amount of hours and the money pays their bills and whatever. it stinks having no money though. i've been there. what do you want to do? what's your dream? go for it. then there are the questions--what if my dream job doesn't pay much, but i love it? do i do that or choose something that i'll dread but will pay the bills? .......
i see you're taking a trip across the pond. yay! i'm sure esther will be happy to see you!
It's just a matter of priorities and everyone is different. In addition, the stress level of each job and the working environment are certainly other factors. It's a challenge to fit everything (including having a social life) into a 24hr day while still getting a healthy amount of sleep. Women in particular are in a challenging situation once they have kids... how to be the full-time everything to everyone. It's an unrealistic model.
Exactly what she ^^^ said
But it should be noted that I put in 12-hour days at my job on a regular basis and a 60-hour work week is normal for me. I know, I know, that's not the same as your crazy 43 hours in two days, but not everyone can be Nick Crawford!
p.s. I love your header. You could keep it.
How do you nurse an airplane?
I agree.
Oh to be paid hourly.
If I've got a project or something that I really want to finish, I'll work extra hours. Normally, though, after 8 hours at work I'm more than ready to get out of there. I want there to be more to my life then work.
