  • It's Official!
    Yes, Esther officially visited me.

    True
story. I found the girl in Chicago on the 9th and brought her up to
Mil-town late at night with Chris. Gave her the tour of his new house
and started the first of many visits to the C-Haus that weekend with Kristen and Mandy
and Amanda and Lindsay. On Saturday, I gave her the full tour of
Milwaukee starting with the Crawford shop and my messy office. My
highlight was taking a dump truck for a ride with her. The lucky girl
that she is, I dragged her along to look at some tree work, a sick
shrub, and a yellow lawn. I think that was her highlight.

Since she's planning on applying to
Marquette for grad school, the two of us waltzed around the campus for
a bit while she complained about how hot it is in Milwaukee. Favorite
memory of the campus? We're chilling out at the little chapel in the
academic core when a wedding party starts strolling by us. The groom?
Carrying a Miller Lite no less. And the groomsman. And every
bridesmaid. With cigarettes to boot! It was a great cultural experience
    for the Oregonian.

That night I took her to the lakefront where we walked out on Government Pier. Brent and I strolled on this pier back in August.
It was a little different this time with a girl in hand. Past the
fishermen with their lanterns. Past the passed out. But not all the way
to the end due to a making out couple. We talked for a while, and I
asked Esther to be my girlfriend. She paused for 20 minutes. She says
it was a dramatic pause. I say she was being dramatic. In any event,
she asked if I was serious (I had said "in all seriousness..."). I was
serious, and I am now her boyfriend. OKAY. *breathes* Is that what you were waiting for?

    For
you romantic types (so yeah I am), we had a city skyline backdrop with
fireworks and all. My fireworks people were a little slow on the
timing, but they pulled through as you can see in the picture.
Hopefully you can see our silhouette.

The next morning, we made it to Church in the City
with the C-Haus and Chi Alpha gangs. The message was good, the music
was.... Well, we had lots to talk about. Good thing too, we had a long
drive ahead of us to Chicago. But first! Another stop at the lake for a
photo-op. This Esther girl was standing on a huge concrete block so we
could be in the same frame.

    Wanna
hear something funny? I thought this was funny... Chris's fiance Cassie
took some of her out-of-state classmates to Chicago for a weekend, and
they rolled past Lake Michigan at one point. A classmate of hers from
the West Coast had told her all along that Cassie really needs to see the ocean, she really needs to the ocean cuz it's sooo big...
Then her classmate sees Lake Michigan and says, "You can't see the
other side! Oh wow!" DUH, I tell Esther. Can you imagine? Who thinks
you can see to the other side?! Seriously, the Great Lakes are the
biggest freshwater lakes in the world.
.....she confided that she had never realized you can't see across Lake Michigan...I promised not to tell anyone else, so shhhhhhh

So back in action. We hit the road and made it to the University of Chicago. We actually drove past the spots where I had met Carolyn and Shari this summer,
too! This was my first time to the campus, and it....is.....beautiful!
The buildings feel prestigious, and the landscape? A+ That's saying
    something.

I told Esther that wherever she goes to school, I'll
visit her, including England, her top choice. Actually, that would be
fun.... But you know, Chicago's looking good too if you ask me. So is
the girl with me in the picture. Snapped this one for the memory.

You know, looking at these pictures, I really need to shave my face or get some real facial hair going on...

    I
kept on having this weird looks in pictures since I would end up
wondering if I was pointing it in the right direction or not and forget
to smile. Plus, the batteries were threatening to die at any moment.

    Oh,
that's right, the narrative. So I gave her a driving tour of downtown
Chicago and enjoyed watching her jaw drop over the buildings and the
flurry of activity into the night. If you asked her, she would probably
first tell you about the Muslims she saw! She was so excited, I can't
even explain it. The girl was jumping up and down when we saw a mosque
just down the road from the University of Chicago. fyi...she has a
strong interest in the subject....like thinking of it for grad school,
    yeah....

    To
top off the evening, and this entry, we walked Navy Pier and soaked in
some live music, more photo-ops by the ferris wheel and at the bottom
of this entry, the Chicago skyline.

So yeah, I like Esther. She rocks my socks off.

Credits: Thanks be to God. The short long story is that Vic
is a Chi Alpha campus pastor in Portland, Oregon and a good friend of
Esther's who was getting the word out about Esther's site by leaving comments on people's sites, including mine. He found me through Earl's
site which I heard about at SALT in January. I checked out Esther's
site (which I had seen before), then we exchanged comments (me then her). It really got going here
where we both got mad at each other and decided to see if the other
would come to their senses. I think we're still waiting and watching.

  • Hey!  Great to see your blog!  I've been not so patiently waiting to enjoy the photos and activities of Esther's time there.  Now, yeah!, there is more.  An official boyfriend/girlfriend agreement/announcement.  (Did she really hesitate 20 minutes, or was that a typo and it was 20 seconds??)  This is good;  congratulations to you both!!   Great photos!  Blessings to a fun, cool couple that we almost bumped into in Silver Falls State Park in Oregon. :)

  • YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Not only have you finally posted, but with news that I've been waiting to make "public"!!! (at least Xanga-wise)  I'll bet it was the haiku that eventually put you over the edge

"In all seriousness" ~ I could not be happier for you.  Remember all those times I would say, about almost every girl you met, "nah, she's not right for you," or "nah, you're not right for her"?  That was because I wanted you to have a woman like Esther ~ no one is perfect but you two are perfect for each other!  God does amazing things, even through Xanga and I love the fact that there's a whole Xanga community out there to be thrilled by this news!!

Pssst ~ Esther, honey, are you sure about this? Just teasingggg....

  • That last picture is positively adorable. Methinks I'm about due.

I'll blame it on reading this five minutes after waking up for the reason why I found this line so ridiculously funny: "My highlight was taking a dump truck for a ride with her..." That, or I just read the first half and cracked up because while being erudite, there's still a strong little kid in me. :)

  • Ha! I even tried rephrasing that sentence and finally settled with that.

  • *sobbs, Nick, Nick, Nick, I think you're turning me back into a hopeless romantic again~ I'm touched~~~ , Glad you guys enjoyed the weekend! and Congrats!!! I bet you were anxious during that 20 minutes I know I would probably be. Uni. of Chi is a great place. oh ya I was eating breakfast and saw the dump truck part and choked~ took me 2 minutes to recover~

  • It's about time, yadda yadda. Congrats yadda yadda. Did you guys really go to Chicago or did you photoshop yourselves into some of these pictures Nicholas? The last one and the close-up with the shrub-ed up building seem slightly sketchy...

    - (the dumped girl)

As you know, I approve whole-heartedly. Esther- it was wondeful meeting you and hope to see you around these parts again and often. Now I just need to see who is sent to me next for my facebook relationship...

    - Mandy

  • YAY!! So glad to hear that things are working out!!

...*looking at last pic* Is she really, really little or are you freakishly tall??

  • Thank you. Now how to answer that. Well, neither of us are 5 foot anything, if that helps.

  • I like your entry, and I like you. =)

  • Hahaha, awww, yeah ^^ that helps :o )

ryc: hmm, everyone you know has entries like what?

  • Great to hear about you and esther "boyfriend/girlfriend"... been enjoying her blog and sounds like you two have similar passions and personalities.  Hope it goes well for you... and even if it doesn't work well for dating I'm sure you'll stay friends for a long-long-long time... Hope it does go well for you guys.

  • I'm so glad you posted about this, and I'm sure that Vic will appreciate the credit where credit  is due...I'm happy for you both...

  • *Sigh* Congratulations! i'm really excited and happy for you guys

  • (Oh yes, and I'm Vic's daughter.)

  • Lovely!! You make an adorable couple! How exciting!!

  • Awwwwwww Esther's comment made me squeal, I love you guys!!

  • Hi you're welcome and I meant it! Esther seems like an amazing girl! I am enjoying following your story! It brings back really good memories and my dh and I will celebrate 11 years of blessed marriage this Saturday! Awwwwwwwww young love that God has put together! Ain't nothing sweeter! Enjoy this precious time!!

  • Congrats!  Personally my favorite is the fourth pic.  I hope that the trickiness of grad school decisions and grad school funding work out.  Univ. of chicago is notoriously hellish (and in my mind unethical) with regard to funding (at least from what I've heard in classics and ancient near eastern studies).  If I recall correctly, their NE department crams ancient with modern and medieval into the same department.  At least regarding ancient near eastern whatnot, they notoriously do not fund their students and consequently have a high attrition rate in Hebrew Bible.  I am unsure if they fund their more modern near eastern students.  In Ancient whatnot last year, the fourth person on their admissions list (who came into Hopkins with me this year) got and amazing 12 grand which was still less than every other program to which he was admitted.  I also spoke with an Egyptology student who only got 3 grand from them in stipend and when she visited them on their student days the other students told her she should be thrilled with three grand.  In addition, my undergrad mentor graduated from U. of Chicago in classics and she said that near eastern students entered the labyrinth of the program and the minotaur captured them never to relinquish them from exciting projects like the Hittite dictionary  ... um ... maybe I should be leaving this on Esther's site.  .... but she'll probably read it here anyway.

Anyway I only learned to ask these hard hitting questions of grad schools toward the end of the process.  It is better the earlier you ask blunt questions like rates of attrition, funding, and ability to get a job upon completion of the program.  Fortunately I had professors who alerted me to such issues.  But I should probably end this diatribe with a disclaimer.  I am only familiar with ancient near eastern whatnot and, even more specifically, Hebrew Bible.  But it can't hurt to ask the questions in September as you decide to which programs you will apply.

Sorry for the long boring comment.

  • Nick...ITS ABOUT TIME you settled on one girl.  are you going to delete the 100's of other girls' names out of your phone book from around the globe (if you don't believe it Esther, just ask him!).  Better not delete mine of course, unless its the old wisconsin one, in which case you should definitely.  Joking aside, count me in with the many other well-wishers :)   don't wait too long to kiss her, cause life is too short for that!

  • Good job Bullmiester...way to seal the deal.

  • CLICK NOW!!!

This is where the "real" scoop on this story is. Check it out now!

And who says I can't advertise? UWM? pssh...yeah right...

  • Congrats!  So exciting to know both of you.

  • ha - thanks for the comment... and the pics of you and esther are adorable - congrats!

  • Hey, your new header is the James Dean pic!!! This is awesome!! I can't believe you used a picture that I took at MY house...representin' the CHaus   (Now, aren't you surprised that I can tell what picture it is?? Yeah, I'm good like that.)

Oh, and just to mess with your expectations, your facebook comments are staying put.

  • Awwww.... that's sweet. So in the last picture, does that portray the actual height discrepancy between the two of you? Just wondering.

RYC: when all the work drama is over I will post a sanitized version (ie no real names or locations) on my "work" blog. Then you can link all you want. I have kept it protected thus far because I don't want to get in trouble for revealing too much. There are probably legal issues involved.

  • Congrats to the both of you!
I would avoid the land line, but my cell phone doesn't get service out there.
Too far out into the boonies...and yes, of course I'll landscape tastefully (try my best anyhow). I'm quite looking forward to that. Wildflower gardens, pine tree groves and hopefully everything else I can dream up.

  • For all wondering: I am 4'11" & he is 6'2".. give or take a half inch.. so all photos where we're in the same frame meant a lot of bending down on his part. =)

  • Or in the case with the lake in the background, she stood on a 2+ foot tall concrete block. Really it's not coming down to her level, hehe... According to her, she's normal, and I'm just freakishly tall.

  • Hey, you added a picture, or did I just miss it last time?? I like it

  • Congratulations! Nick, you're a really lucky guy. Esther is soooooo great. I love the pic of you guys in front of the ferris wheel. And what a great story! I hereby award you 10,000 eprops.

  • No...no edits to the entry.

  • I'm currently patting myself on the back for my good timing ~ I haven't done the "year ago entry" thing for a good long while, just HAPPENED to pop over today, and get a spectacular entry from EXACTLY a year ago!! Yeah, me.

I suppose now that I'm done congratulating myself, I should congratulate YOU...and here, a year later, you're delivering this wonderful woman to grad school in England. I can't believe it's been a year already, but I've been happy for you for the last year (Mostly, I stand by my first comment on this entry ~ I approve of Esther and Esther only )

Hey! How's England? Do I get a postcard? 1942 W. Camelot Dr, Flagstaff, AZ 86001. (I figure no one else is looking at this entry all the way back here)

I'm also noticing that this entry marks the gradual drop-off of the super-memorable Xanga entries, at least for me, because I stopped paying so much attention So we might not get any more "year-ago" comments like, "Hey, I remember this one, we weren't speaking" or "Hey, I think I was painting my toenails while reading this entry" or whatever

Long comment = I miss you. Call when you get back.
